Automating the mundane to stem the flow of the ‘big resignation’

automating the mundaneThe ‘Big Resignation’ is a global challenge fuelled by Covid-19, as a result of people all over the world questioning and reflecting on their career options, as well as their work-lifebalance. Recent Microsoft research highlighted that a shocking 41% of us seriously considered leaving our jobs in 2021. New 2022 reports suggest that the trend continues, as one in three of us in the UK plan on handing in our notice in the next 12 months.

As they sit by and watch the balance of power shift from employer to employee, many leaders are asking themselves if there is more they could be doing in 2022 to stem the flow of the big resignation for their organisations. Of course in order to retain talent, investing in your people and taking care of your workforce’s psychological safety are both paramount in building the right culture to empower an organisation’s staff retention strategy. But research suggests almost a quarter of your workforce would consider leaving your organisation as a result of having to use what they perceive to be ‘poor software’. And whilst the software you have implemented might be perfectly good at doing what it was designed to do, the mundane tasks that fall to humans as a result of processes and systems that have evolved over many years, seem to be having a negative impact on staff loyalty.

BETTER USE OF YOUR STAFF’S TIME

Mundane tasks in the workplace, often workflow related, are repetitive and boring, but they are necessary and therefore unavoidable. However, - human labour is no longer your only option. Since artificial intelligence really started to become mainstream in 2020, we are all getting better at applying available automation technologies to time-consuming, monotonous tasks, such as document processing, so that we can make better use of our staff’s time.

AI CAN BOLSTER LOYALTY

The benefits of automating the mundane, clearly go beyond eliminating boredom for human beings. If you can free your people from the unnecessary frustrations your systems and processes present on a daily basis, the chances are your workforce will feel more appreciated, become more fulfilled in their roles, and you will be able to bolster loyalty and staff retention for your business.

Today, by expertly combining automation technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, optical character recognition and natural language processing - we can empower machines to carry out most of the tedious, repetitive and uninteresting work that is currently engulfing your people.

HUMAN-IN-THE-LOOP & STRAIGHT-THROUGH PROCESSING

Of course, machines that can work around the clock 24 hours per day. If taught by humans via machine learning, they will only throw up exceptions when absolutely necessary, in order to trigger ‘human-in-the-loop’ input, which increases your ‘straight-through-processing’ percentages (i.e. the proportion of work that requires no human intervention at all).

PEOPLE HAVE INTELLECT, PERSONALITY & CHARISMA, MACHINES DON'T

The right AI solution means far fewer errors and significantly greater productivity is possible, freeing up your talented workforce to use their intellect, personality and charisma to deal with the more complex and rewarding activities your organisation needs to address.
